A Rant on Love

At first I didn’t know what love was.

Then, I didn’t believe in love because of all the horrid things that I saw.

And though I’m still very young, I have learned quite a lot about what love is. I remember getting the first glimpse of love when I was in middle school. But it wasn’t the love that could be seen on earth but the love of God. And again I know that for those who are much older than me, it might sound foolish that I learned of such love in middle school. It might confuse some people, especially for those who do not even believe in God, that I learned something so valuable by someone/something whose mere existence is only measured by one’s faith.

I wasn’t really sure of what love was so one day I did the obvious thing and went on dictionary.com and typed in the word love. But honestly, 28 definitions do not help at all when you want a single definition of what this word is. Already, even from the definitions given,  it’s so complex.

So then, I went to the bible because I knew in the back of my head that there was a verse about love I had memorized when I was younger. In the bible it states;

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
1 Corinthians 13: 4-7

If this is what love is, then I can only say that I love two people on earth. But if to love means everything that dictionary.com defines it as, then I can add a couple more to the list.

I believe in love now because even though I see the revolting things on earth, I can see the good. As corny as it sounds, love makes the world go ’round. There are countless quotes all throughout history about how powerful love is. There are numerous movies, books, games, songs and even studies on love. If love wasn’t important, why would so many people all over the world spend all that time examining and analyzing this emotion? I don’t think any of this is a coincidence.

Human emotions are pretty complex and hard to understand but once they are understood, their power shouldn’t be underestimated. Once I really learned, I can now see where all those adults were coming from. Because love is the only shocking act left on the planet. (Or so Ashton Kutcher says)
